As the storm of Ice Bucket Challenge is sweeping throughout the world, our Vice Chancellor Professor David Llyod today took on this social media campaign nominated by Professor Warren Bebbington, the Vice Chancellor & President of the University of Adelaide. I was luckily being a witness to his challenge and donate some golden coins from my pocket for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research.
Let’s take a look at David’s performance today:
Hooaa.. imagine a bucket of ice-water mix dumping on your head, the participants have to be plucked up the courage. Rise and applaud, that’s what I did after David’s challenge.
The Ice Bucket Challenge originally became popular on social media in some areas of the Northern United States. The major motive of this social media campaign is to raise awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and promote fundraising for relevant researches. In Australia, people participate this challenge for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. The stipulation of this challenge is interesting, that the nominated participants have only 24 hours to comply or forfeit by way of a financial donation.
As international students, I am aware of this social media campaign via Australian media sources, I reckon it is a real good opportunity for us to recognise this challenge and even participate in this charitable campaign. To be honest I haven’t heard about Motor Neurone Disease and ALS either before the Ice Bucket Challenge became a media buzz on the Internet. But in fact there are a number of people being suffered from this sort of disease in the world and there is no effective drugs or ways to cure MND and ALS yet. Think about those sufferers in your hometown. So why don’t we join in this campaign and donate some pocket money to support relevant medical researches against it?
The challenge David met this morning plays a significant role in raising awareness of MND to UniSA staff and students, as an international student ambassador I am ready to take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge and nominate some of my close friends in China and Australia.
Guys, you are ready to the Ice Bucket Challenge, aren’t you?
